Implementing SEO for accountants is essential to maximize online presence, gain visibility over competitors, and attract potential clients.
There are countless ways to approach SEO for accountants and many different tactics you can use. Many of these tactics work best when they’re used in tandem with one another.
So how do you get yourself out there? Here are some tips:
SEO 101: A Quick Intro
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website’s ranking on Google so that when potential customers search for your services, your website is in the first few search results.
When done correctly, SEO can help drive more traffic and leads directly to your website—which means more clients, more revenue, and more success.
Strategy #1: Not All Keywords Are Equal
You want to show up on Google when people search for "accountant" or "tax accountant," right?
Unfortunately, unless you’re Deloitte or PwC, ranking high for these keywords is difficult. Here’s why:
Many keyword research tools (like Semrush) provide you with 2 metrics for every keyword:
- Volume: how many users searched for this word
- Difficulty: how hard it is to rank high for this word
Keyword difficulty is calculated based on the page authority of websites currently ranking for that keyword and their backlink quality.
In other words, if your business has a relatively new domain or is not as well known as Deloitte, your page authority will likely be low. This means if you choose a difficult keyword, you’ll have to spend a lot of time and effort to compete against a more established company.
However, there’s an easy way around this and boost SEO for accountants.
If you’re a small business, start-up, or entrepreneur, the key is to choose keywords that have high volume and low difficulty. For example, instead of “accountant,” use the keyword “tax accountant.” This keyword has a high volume but a low difficulty. You will have a better chance of ranking highly for this keyword.
To find keywords like this, it's essential to think about what else people might be searching for when they're looking for an accountant in your area. For example, if you're in Vancouver, people might also search for "Vancouver taxes," or "Vancouver accountant.”
Strategy #2: Write Great Content
Great SEO for accountants involves strategic and purposeful use of keywords.
The keywords need to be incorporated naturally into high-quality and engaging content. You need to write about things that matter to your clients. Do they want to know how to budget for their business? Do they want a better understanding of the numbers that matter most?
In other words, you need to balance writing effective content for both your target audience and Google’s SEO robots.
Strategy #3: Be Responsive
Our last tip for SEO for accountants: make sure your website works on every screen size.
56% of consumers in the U.S. search for businesses using their phones.
You want to ensure customers can easily use your website whether they’re on a desktop, mobile, or tablet. If your website is hard to use on a mobile device, there’s a high chance a potential customer will click out of your website without looking into what you offer.
Creating a website that adapts to any screen size is called “responsive web design.” Not only does it affect your SEO ranking, but it also influences custom retention.
